Section of Super Pit wall collapses ABC News Online February 9th, 2008 | ||
A 50-metre stretch of the wall at one of Australia's biggest open pit gold mines has collapsed. The landslide occurred at Kalgoorlie's Super Pit, with rocks falling several hundred metres and cutting off a main transport route for trucks carrying ore. No-one has been reported hurt in the incident. The mine's operator, KCGM, recently applied to extend the mine, bringing it closer to the town, but the Kalgoorlie council has raised concerns about the stability of the pit wall. KCGM says the collapse had been expected, and trucks had been taken off the route. |
