In
this annual meeting of shareholders and directors of Barrick Gold in
Toronto on May 2, 2007, the following communities, organizations and
persons of Chile and Argentina would like to communicate the following:
The communities of the basins of the Huasco Valley in Chile
and of San Juan and La Rioja in Argentina are directly threatened by
the Barrick Gold Corporation. We stand opposed to the mega-mining
complex Veladero/Pascua Lama as well as exploration of Barrick Gold in
La Rioja and anywhere in our countries. Civil society throughout
countries is opposed to all megamining projects in our lands.
It is unacceptable to apply your methods of mineral
extraction upon our ecosystems. Our Andes and foothill mountain ranges
constitute an ecosystem essential for human and ecological life. Our
water is born in these glaciars, springs, oases, rivers and aquifer.
Barrick Gold is putting our lives and future into risk, contaminating,
causing desertification and climate change.
Barrick's mining projects are incompatible with agricultural
activity. They are incompatible with traditional forms of life, with
public health of our communities and cities. Big mining is incompatible
with sustainable development of the communities of both sides of the
Andes.
Barrick Gold is not financially capable of, nor has shown any
interest in paying the true costs of mitigation and restauration for
the damages they are causing: Acid mine drainage, spills, accidents,
heavy metals contamination and the desertification of regions dependent
upon fresh water. This impact upon our agriculture, health, environment
and upon our chidren's lives is unacceptable.
Our communities have never given prior informed consent to
these projects. We demand democratic popular referendums. We are
OPPOSED to mining as a means of economic development. We will fight for
our mountains, for our future -- for the rights of our mountains, the
rights of our children, are our very own human rights.
WE WILL NOT PERMIT THE PLUNDER OF OUR COMMUNITIES, THE
DESTRUCTION OF OUR ENVIRONMENT, CULTURE, HEALTH AND SOVREIGNITY OF THE
PEOPLE OF BOTH ARGENTINA AND CHILE.
WE DEMAND THE IMMEDIATE CEASE OF YOUR MINING ACTIVITIES
WE DEMAND: OUT WITH BARRICK GOLD!

Con motivo de la realizaci�n de la reuni�n anual
de accionistas del Barrick Gold Corporation el 2 de mayo de 2007, en
Toronto, Canad�, nosotros integrantes de organizaciones civiles
sanjuaninas emitimos el siguiente comunicado:
Las comunidades de las cuencas de los Valles de Huayco
(Chile), y San Juan y La Rioja (Argentina) estamos amenazados por
proyectos de Barrick Gold. Nos oponemos a la explotaci�n del complejo
Veladero/Pascua Lama y de cualquier otro, como operaciones de Barrick
en nuestros pa�ses. Como pueblo, estamos en contra de todos los
proyectos de gran miner�a en nuestras tierras.
Es inaceptable aplicar esto m�todo extractivo en nuestros
ecosistemas. Nuestra cordillera como ecosistema es generador de toda
forma de vida en la regi�n. El agua nace de glaciares, vertientes,
vegas, campos, arroyos, acu�feros, y la miner�a pone en riesgo nuestro
futuro, contaminando y causando cambio clim�tico y desertificaci�n.
La miner�a de Barrick Gold es incompatible con la actividad
agropecuaria y el turismo. Es incompatible con las formas de vida
tradicionales, con la salud p�blica. Es incompatible con el desarrollo
sustentable en las comunidades en ambos lados de la cordillera.
Barrick Gold no est� en condiciones ni tiene voluntad de
asegurar y materializar la mitigaci�n y restauraci�n de los impactos
que genera: drenajes �cidos, derrames, filtraciones, y la
desertificaci�n de regiones cuyos habitantes dependen del agua para
vivir. Todo esto es inaceptable para nosotros y las generaciones
venideras.
Nuestras comunidades nunca fueron consultadas respecto al
desarrollo minero. Exigimos consultas populares y democr�ticas.
Estamos en CONTRA de la miner�a destructiva y contaminante, a cielo
abierto con lixiviaci�n con sustancias t�xicas como camino de nuestro
desarrollo econ�mico.
Apelamos a la conciencia de los accionistas de Barrick Gold
Corporation. Nosotros seguiremos luchando por nuestra cordillera, por
nuestras vidas. Los derechos de la cordillera de Los Andes y los
derechos de nuestros hijos, son nuestros derechos humanos.
NO PERMITIREMOS EL SAQUEO DE NUESTRAS COMUNIDADES, EL
AGOTAMIENTO DE NUESTROS RECURSOS NATURALES, LA DESTRUCCION DE NUESTRA
NATURALEZA, CULTURA, SALUD Y SOBERANIA.
EXIGIMOS EL INMEDIATO CESE DE SU ACTIVIDADES MINERAS EXTRACTIVAS Y DESTRUCTIVAS
